Egg Inc Wiki

We've added a bunch of templates to the wiki to more easily link to different pages (and parts of pages) on the wiki in the form of an image. We've long had the templates for Bocks / Soul Eggs / Prophecy Eggs / Epic Research / Boosts, but I created one for Eggs several days ago, and the new admin Krazy-J1 has made a bunch for the individual artifacts, stones, and ingredients.

I do wonder if it would be more orderly to have fewer templates & just add parameters to those templates - for example, we could have 1 template for puzzle cubes and a parameter from 1 to 4 for the type of puzzle cube - and even better, we could add another parameter to display rarity if we can somehow superimpose the artifact on top of the appropriate colored light. Or we could even change artifacts as a whole into a single template, but that might be taking template consolidation too far.

An upside to fewer templates would be if we want to change something about all the templates there would be fewer pages to go back to and change.

But for now, it is better to have these templates than not have them, and there is a benefit to having individual templates if I'm being honest. The average editor is going to understand what the "Ancient Puzzle Cube" template refers to in wikitext than they will understand "ArtifactIcon|Cube|1" or something like that would mean, and while the former will autocomplete for an editor who is trying to type it out, the latter will not.

So I'm unsure what is best here, and I welcome anyone to share their opinion on the matter.

Regardless of what standard this wiki adopts, I do think it would be good for us to add template descriptions as well. People who try inserting an existing template into a page in the Visual Editor (even though Source Editor is recommended) should be able to view this description, particularly when choosing the parameters for the template. They shouldn't have to guess at what Parameter 1 means. Furthermore, people who view the Template's page on the wiki should be able to see a description and/or example usage of the template there.

If we keep a large number of templates, we may ironically want an "InfoIconExplanation" template to explain how to use a lot of these Info Icon templates (within a "noinclude" tag on each template's page, of course). Such a template could take the title of the page it's on and use that in its explanation & example for how to use the template.
