Habitats are buildings used to store chickens. As of 1.9.1, there are 19 different levels of housing.
The base price of buying or upgrading a house depends on how many of that level you have immediately before your purchase, not on how many houses you have of any other level. Thus, building up to 4 coops and then upgrading them into 4 shacks will cost slightly more money than upgrading your first coop into a shack, then building a 2nd coop and upgrading it to a shack, then doing the same with a 3rd and then a 4th. It would be slightly cheaper than that to upgrade your first coop to a shack and then build the other 3 houses as shacks initially, but this approach would forfeit some easy increments to your Piggy Bank. (If you are never going to spend money on the game anyway or if your piggy bank is full, then go ahead!)
As of 1.10, getting maximum housing upgrades and all Chicken Universes allows for a maximum chicken capacity of 11.34 billion.
You can reduce the price of upgrading a house with Epic Research.
Purchasing a Habitat will add 25 to the Piggy Bank.
Note: Prices below are BASE PRICES accurate to within 0.002 in Version 1.7.7 (Dec 2018). If you have "Cheaper Contractors" epic upgrade and think this table needs updating, ensure that you have done the proper calculation to obtain the original price with an error of less than 0.002 whatever-illion. Now it may be inaccurate.
